The Board of Trustees has five members
that are elected at large. The Superintendent of the District
is the Ex-officio Secretary to the Board.
Among its many responsibilities as the official governing
body of the District the Board:
Is
a trustee for students
Hears the views of
the public
Sets District policies
and goals
Decides
how to prioritize and spend District funds
Maintains relationships
with other school boards and related organizations
Oversees employee
relations and approves contracts
Establishes curriculum
and standards
The Superintendent of the District serves as the chief executive
officer, manages district staff, and ensures that Board policies
are carried out.
As the policy making body for the school district, the Board of Trustees is charged with providing a quality public education program for the residents of Auburn Union School District in accordance with the California Constitution, State Education Code, other state and federal laws, adopted Board policies, and the desires of the community.
As elected officials, Board members are state officers responsible for the governance of the school district, which is considered a subdivision of the state. Auburn Union School District is independent of the government bodies of the City of Auburn or Placer County, but cooperates with them.
Beyond the establishment of school district policies, the Board is responsible for adoption of the annual budget and approval of all expenditures; employment of personnel; approval of curriculum, textbooks and courses of study; and decision making relative to the purchase, planning and construction of all school district property.
Board members have no power to act individually in the name of the entire Board. Action can only be taken when a majority of the Board is in formal session.
We provide our students with a rigorous, relevant and comprehensive curriculum that challenges students to use critical thinking, problem solving and 21st century skills to become responsible citizens.
We believe that:
All
students can learn in a challenging, academic environment
where they are inspired to reach their highest potential.
A
safe learning environment is the foundation from which education
grows.
The
active participation of families is critical to the success
of students.
The
district and the Auburn community are partners in providing
a quality education. As partners, the relationship requires
open communication and transparency of process, so that each
partner feels a sense of ownership in the outcome.
We must
maintain the integrity of the district’s
financial future to ensure our capacity to support a high
quality education.
Regular meetings of the Board
of Trustees are held the second and fourth Wednesday of
the month at 7:00 p.m., and special meetings are called
as needed.
The public is welcome to attend the meetings that are usually
held at the Auburn Union School District Office, located
at 255 Epperle Lane, Auburn, CA.
Regular meetings that fall on holidays are either cancelled
or rescheduled.
The Board occasionally schedules additional SPECIAL
MEETINGS or workshops and may meet at other locations such as school
sites. The Budget Committee and 21st Century Committee meetings
are posted as special meetings.
Periodically, the Board of Trustees
calls for a CLOSED SESSION. These sessions are held to
review personnel matters, student expulsions, to instruct
the Board’s bargaining representative,
or to discuss litigation. These Closed Sessions are not public
sessions and those in attendance may be asked to leave the
room or the Board may move to another location for Closed
Session.

Notices of regular Board meetings are
posted at least 72 hours in advanced at the District office.
Agendas outlining topics to be covered during a particular
meeting are posted at each school site.
Those wishing to place an item on an agenda shall furnish
a written request to the Superintendent at least ten days
before the scheduled meeting.
Routine agenda items are approved by a single vote. Items
may be removed from the CONSENT CALENDAR for purposes of
discussion and acted upon separately.

By law, the Board is allowed to take action
only on items on the agenda. Action items are presented to
the Board for discussion and input. Items may be acted upon
at the time of presentation or may be brought back for consideration
at a future meeting.
Any individual or group may also address an issue on a Board
agenda after being recognized by the Board President.
It should not be assumed that by making a motion, a Board
member is necessarily in support of the motion. The member
may simply wish to bring the matter to a vote.
In cases for which there is no specific
agenda item, members of the audience desiring to address
the Board will be invited to speak during the "Citizens and Petitions" segment
of the meeting. Persons wishing to address the Board during this time need
not make a written request in advance.
Once recognized, please
state your name for the record. To allow as many people as possible to speak, comments are limited to three minutes per person, one comment per person. Seven people will be heard during the “Citizens and Petitions” portion of the meeting. If more than seven people wish to speak, “Citizens and Petitions” will continue after all agenda items have been addressed. This is designed to allow all who wish to address the board an opportunity to speak, while also accommodating those attending the meeting for specific board business and agenda items.
During a Board meeting, no person should
discuss complaints against individual employees of the
Auburn Union Elementary School District. Such complaints
should be submitted in oral or written form to the employee’s
supervisor or the principal as required by AR 1312.1.
